Released:
Label: East West Records Uk Ltd
U.K. sensation Birdy was just 15 when she released this debut, on which she covers a clutch of beloved indie rock tunes by the likes of The xx, Phoenix, The Postal Service, and The National, plus "Fire & Rain" by James Taylor for, ya know, good measure. Pretty much every track gets Birdy's piano-dirge treatment, lending formerly jaunty tunes like "1901" and The Naked and Famous' "Young Blood" a ghostly, somnolent quality, our ingénue's trademark. Lone original "Without a Word" gets lost amid the hits, but leaves hope that this clearly ambitious songstress is more than just an enigmatic mockingbird.
