Autechre are known for subdividing the distance between music and noise, and being willing, on occasion, to step over the line. But Oversteps is the duo's most direct album in years. Tracks like "Known(1)," "See on See" and "Os Veix3" look fondly back upon Autechre's b-boy roots with terse, snapping beats and throbbing sub-bass, and on "St Epreo," "Redfall" and "Yuop" they revive the kind of plangent melodies not heard since their earliest releases. Fleshing out the record are uneasy ambient sketches and counterintuitive rhythmic exercises -- "difficult" listening, but worth it.
