Understandably, the Backstreet Boys seem to be going through a kind of identity crisis as they approach middle age, one that they tried to ameliorate by making themselves over into a sort of Backstreet Men on the rather bland, almost adult contemporary flop Unbreakable. On album seven, the Boys get back to being boys -- and to their dance-pop roots. This Is Us feels more vibrant than a BSB album has in years, though their boyish energy is tempered a bit with the maturity and restraint they've acquired in their adult years, resulting in a sleek, cool club sound that suits them.
