The Last Day
Label: Black Top Records
A decade since his last album and 15 years since his last Top 10 country hit, Lisa Hartman’s once-chart-topping, neo-trad husband returns with a surprisingly solid album on an alt-country label. Recurring themes include the rat race and long-term marriage, but other songs address untrustworthy politicians and Internet-age media, a blowhard who won’t go away, addictions kept in check, summer music in winter, and beer as an international language. Singsong melodies meander at times, but the boogie and pedal steel find wide open spaces, too -- and “Right on Time” sounds like soul music.
