Lutoslawski: The Symphonies
Label: Sony Classical
A new recording of the Polish master's infrequently heard Symphony No. 1 (tracks 2 through 5) is appended to a reissue of past Salonen discs to make for a complete Lutoslawski cycle. The composer's third symphony was as close as he ever came to an orchestral hit, and young Salonen's reading with the Los Angeles Philharmonic shows why: The single movement, half-hour work starts with a burst of unison orchestral aggression before scattering into a flock of overlapping, quieter parts. The transitions are handled with precision and style; it's clear how much Salonen knows and admires this catalog.
