The excesses of the "biggest band in the world" started to boil over by 1976; after Robert Plant wrecked his car while on Grecian holiday and the band's myriad addictions began to pile up, they made their first critical gaffe with this companion live album to the concert film The Song Remains the Same, which itself received a tepid reaction. Recorded in Madison Square Garden in July 1973 during the Houses of the Holy tour, the LP was a pale shadow of the volatile, drug-dazed hedonism that ruled '70s stadiums, although it made a perfect foil to the burgeoning punk rebellion.
