On Avery Island
Label: Fire Records
Innocence dissolves in Southern gothic disarray and surrealist surveys of floors covered in babies, bee-cluttered mouths and roller coasters spiraling over cities of frost-covered angels. And, somewhere, among the clanking dissonance and occultist figurines, the songs' characters find glimmers of the sacred in smokey cars and empty rooms. It's the last, hopeful glimpse of an irrecoverable peace -- and is more cathartic than confusing, more majestic than disturbing.
