One of Alan Gilbert's innovations as music director is the "Contact" series of new music concerts. (As in, "get in touch" with living composers.) Anders Hillborg's "Vaporized Tivoli" starts with high drama, as fanfares hocket between the winds and brass, and it entertains throughout (with feints at jazzy stomp and cartoony exercise). Andrew Norman's "Try" motors through fields of glissando and post-minimal riffing before settling down in a clearing of pastoral lyricism. Less hyperactive, though maybe most impressive, is Unsuk Chin's six-movement, Korean-street-theater-inspired "Gougalon."
