Preachers of the Night

Sort of like if Scottish metal pirates Alestorm were priests instead, or like a way less nuanced answer to the Swedish band Ghost, Germany's Powerwolf deploy serviceable riffing in support of a shtick they don't quite have tunes for. But their medieval Catholicism crusade can be entertaining anyway. They're fond of high-mass harmonies (see "Coleus Sanctus" and "Kreuzfeuer"), revert to pre-Vatican II Latin a lot, and even include a confession-booth scene amid the speed-galloping hellfire damnation of "Cardinal Sin." Church organ counterpoint and gothic atmospheres help too, when they use them.
