Songs for the End of the World
Label: Frontiers Records
While not as ambitiously thought-out as its 2004 or 2008 predecessors, this 2012 set is still a more consistently tuneful pile of hard pop than we've a right to expect from a former teen idol whose last pop hit was in the '80s. Springfield soups up biblical titles "Gabriel" and "Joshua"; pushes Stone Templed riffs in "Depravity" and "My Last Heartbeat" (the latter via Jimmy Castor); catchily confesses creepiness in "I Hate Myself" and "Love Screws Me Up"; goes big emo in "I Found You." Then he closes with Who chords and Sting hiccups in "One Way Street," staring down at nowhere men below.
