Emerging from the retro/revival movement spawned by the holy trinity of The Black Crowes, The Black Keys and The White Stripes, Rival Sons are dutiful students of the classics. As on previous albums, Jay Buchanan is their most potent asset. Dig his megaton pipes on "Run From Revelation" and "Keep on Swinging"; he's one of the rare modern howlers deserving of comparisons to titans like Paul Rodgers and Phil Mogg. His band, meanwhile, once again proves durable, if not terribly unique. Yet on "Manifest Destiny" parts one and two they do try their hand at long-form psychedelia, a first for them.
