Take Me Back to Where I Was
Label: Five Seven Music
After bowing out of the band for album two, vocalist Carah Faye Charnow is back for III, meaning fans of Shiny Toy Guns' debut will feel a little more at home here. Her presence adds a softer, more seductive touch (think Emily Haines of Metric) -- a needed element against all the razor-edge synths and robo-beats -- and, alongside Chad Petree's grungy shouts, provides some of the album's most dramatic moments like "If I Lost You," "Wait for Me" and the Fleetwood Mac-esque "Fading Listening." But it doesn't mean the band's lost any edge -- just check that Ke$ha-like sass on "Speaking Japanese."
