The Coup

The Coup beg you to pay attention to their radical politics, but it's hard to get past the group's jumping Oak-town funk or Boot Riley's startling clear poetry. "The Shipment" is wiggling dirty funk, while the ramped-up guitar-driven soul of "Busterismology" recalls midperiod Just Blaze. Riley's lyrics capture "beauty in the cracks of the cement" as the lights of an ambulance remind our lyricists of "midnight in a dope fiend's eyes." It's the sort of attention to scenic detail that makes "Me and Jesus the Pimp" one of the best narrative hip-hop songs ever.
