Post-Nigerian independence, pre-civil war, these Lagos hipsters were at the forefront of a musical scene that held Fela Kuti as its patron saint and James Brown (arguably) as god. The singing guitars hit sparkling highlife highs one minute and the musty depths of funk the next, while the talking drums issue straight from Africa's heart. These bands never went anywhere, but their forgotten voices ring out with total authority, making a long-lost time alive again -- briefly -- for us. It's hypnotic stuff, eerie and familiar and freaky and different -- and worthy of many listens.
