Lead vocalist Harry McVeigh has claimed White Lies have never really been into bands like Joy Division or Editors, and they are quite flummoxed by all the comparisons. So we'll go ahead and assume that all that Peter Hook-style bass, that staccato punch, that enveloping cloud of synths, that depressive deadpan tone of McVeigh's is just a natural product of growing up in the U.K. Routing that post-punk sound through the anthemic ambitiousness of Coldplay, the band forms a big, dark cloud for its listeners to cozy up under and brood, and maybe dance some, and then brood some more.
