The Sanctified Blues (From Congo Square)
Label: Blue Engine Records
Now that Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has its own label -- Blue Engine Records -- it's a good bet that casual audiences will soon gain a greater perception of this ace ensemble's range. Kicking things off for the imprint is a live double album, recorded in 2010. Opener "2/3s Adventure" shows how serious this band is about representing jazz's Latin tinge, but this group of classicists also pays tribute to Ellington's legacy ("Sunset and the Mockingbird"). Excerpts from Marsalis' own recent suites ("Inaki's Decision" and "The Sanctified Blues") are strewn through the setlist, too.
